Police in Mystic are still trying to figure out what happened when a police officer and a woman were attacked by a dog inside a hotel. Police shot the dog but it survived.
Police say the woman who was bitten by the dog at the hotel was visiting the woman who was taking care of it.
The Day of New London captured a picture of the dog after it was shot by a veteran officer in Stonington, Sunday afternoon. Police were called to a second floor hallway of the Residence Inn Mystic after one woman was reportedly attacked by the dog.
Police say the other woman who was taking care of the pit bull for a relative was struggling to control of it. The officer tried to help and was also attacked.
"Latching at his arm and at that time the officer discharged one round into the dog, injuring the dog," said Capt. Jerry Desmond, Stonington Police.
Eventually police were able to control the dog and get it out of the hotel before anybody else was hurt.
"The woman who was attacked had severe injuries, the officer had minor injuries," said Desmond.
The dog was also treated for its injuries and is now quarantined at the Groton Animal Shelter.
"When an animal attacks, sometimes they're put it down if they're deemed to be vicious or dangerous. It's a possibility but I don't want to speculate at this point we have to continue the investigation," said Desmond.
Police are contacting the owner of the dog and looking into whether or not it has bitten anyone else before.
"Trying to investigate the dog's history and that sort of thing," said Desmond.
News 8 was not able to speak to anyone at the Residence Inn. In fact when we arrived were asked to stay off the property.
