Canton City Alderman Indicted

JACKSON, MS—Calvin Louis Smith, 56, a Canton City alderman, was arraigned today in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Linda R. Anderson pursuant to a federal indictment charging him with bribery in connection with a series of transactions of the city of Canton, Mississippi, announced U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen.
Davis is scheduled for trial on July 9, 2013, before District Judge Henry T. Wingate. If convicted of the charges, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The public is reminded that an indictment is an allegation that a defendant has committed a crime. All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
